Is Product Hunt the new product launch tool?
I’ve often wondered what the effect of being featured on ProductHunt was & how it compared to other, more established outlets. The effect of being covered by TechCrunch has been pretty well documented, as too has that of HackerNews.
So, in the interest of building with openness in mind, I wanted to share the breakdown of our announcement day traffic and how our ProductHunt feature helped us.
Launch Day
We announced Button, about a week ago and received some mainstream web media coverage. We were also added to ProductHunt by somebody we didn’t know (huzzah) and when we found it through friends messaging us, we’d already gained some steam. We were in 5th place for the day with a dozen or so upvotes.
We shared our excitement online & quickly shot to first place for the day.
Excited to see @usebutton on @ProductHunt! Thanks everyone!! Up vote love? http://t.co/W2sfvaQing — Chris Maddern (@chrismaddern) July 10, 2014
Check out @usebutton‘s profile on @ProductHunt; we’re building some great mobile commerce loyalty & engagement tools! http://t.co/C3Dhk5KjzW — Mike Dudas (@mdudas) July 10, 2014
As soon as we got into the top 3, we started seeing a significant amount of traffic from ProductHunt on the website. On Google Analytics realtime, there were always 2-3 people landing on the site from ProductHunt in any given 60 second window.
The numbers
For the launch, ProductHunt was our top referrer, sending 2.6x the visitors to our new page of conventional web media.

As soon as we got into the top 3, we started seeing a significant amount of traffic from ProductHunt on the website. On Google Analytics realtime, there were always 2-3 people landing on the site from ProductHunt in any given 60 second window.

But, the average mainstream webmedia visitor was more likely to sign up (numbers shown as % of traffic).
```I’ve often wondered what the effect of being featured on ProductHunt was & how it compared to other, more established outlets. The effect of being covered by TechCrunch has been pretty well documented, as too has that of HackerNews.
So, in the interest of building with openness in mind, I wanted to share the breakdown of our announcement day traffic and how our ProductHunt feature helped us.
### Launch Day
We announced [Button](http://usebutton.com), about a week ago and received some mainstream web media coverage. We were also added to ProductHunt by somebody we didn’t know (huzzah) and when we found it through friends messaging us, we’d already gained some steam. We were in 5th place for the day with a dozen or so upvotes.
Organic Conversations
The thing that impressed (and surprised) me most about ProductHunt (infact, what inspired me to write this article) was the number of organic conversations that began from it. This conversation on the post is one of the best examples of social discovery leading to even more social discovery, that I’ve ever seen:
###
Being featured on ProductHunt was pretty exciting for us on our launch day (and anecdotally, TONS of our friends reached out about it). ProductHunt has fast become a real discovery portal for new services which has a demographic of users that are really valuable to us as a technology startup.
Let's talk about it.
Head on over to Twitter and let's talk more.
